Israel: Antifa opposes nationalist ‘Jerusalem Flag Parade’

Jerusalem Antifa took action against the Jerusalem Flag Parade nationalist march held annually on 13th of May. The parade celebrates Jerusalem Day: national holiday commemorating establishment of Israeli control over Jerusalem’s Old City in the aftermath of the June 1967 Six-Day War. Thousands of people take part in the march.
Jerusalem Antifa dropped a huge banner which read “Jerusalem against Nationalism” in Hebrew and Arabic on a building on the route of the parade. Six activists who took part in the action were detained for ‘hurting public feelings’ and the banner was confiscated by the police.
According to Jerusalem Antifa statement, the action was taken against “thousands of people [who] come to march and set the fires of hate to our streets, with thousands of National Flags, Racist and Fascist hate chants. The action is also an act of solidarity with the Palestinian shop owners that were forced to shut down so the Parade could go trough their streets. (…) Our Jerusalem is a city of Love, Acceptance and Diversity, and we will not let anyone paint it in other colours that only bring on us more Hate, Nationalism and Violence.”
