They called it the ‘Great War’, and it was supposed to be the ‘war to end war’. More than a century later, the war is still ongoing.

It is, essentially, the same war that began in 1914: the war between the great capitalist powers to divide the world between them. Some of the actors have changed, but the underlying dynamic remains the same.

As long as capitalism survives, the war will go on.

In 1914, the internationalists called the workers of the world to take up arms, not against their fellow workers but against the entire social order responsible for the universal murder.

Their cause then remains ours today.

This book brings together articles from several contributors, some concerned with the First World War published on the occasion of its centenary, some more generally analytical, and some directed at the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Palestine.

Its introductory chapter “What is revolutionary defeatism?” links the internationalists of 1914 with those of today.
