About

Freedom

Founded in 1886 by Charlotte Wilson,  Freedom is the world’s oldest anarchist journal and publishing house, and Britain’s largest radical bookstore.

Volunteer at the Bookshop

As a not-for-profit bookshop, we are fortunate to have had the support and commitment of hundreds of volunteers over the years. Volunteers do regular shifts in the shop, and help with promotions, events and book-stalls.

Regular volunteers receive a staff discount at the shop. We are a small and friendly team and youi will gain skills and experience within the book trade and radical campaigning movements. Email the shop to discuss volunteering.

Write and Edit

Freedom anarchist journal is crowdsourced and produced semi-annually.

The Freedom newswire feeding this website is a daily source of original anarchist news and views for thousands of readers worldwide.

You can send us action reports, comment and opinion articles on current events, and feature articles including book reviews. Please follow the length and format of current articles in these categories.

We are also looking for news-writers and editors to join the team. Prior experience in activist or mainstream media is desirable.

Our History

An edited amalgamation of several different accounts, this essay only really skims the surface of the Freedom Press’s long and storied history, and a much fuller account can be found in A Beautiful Idea: History of the Freedom Press Anarchists by Rob Ray.

More about its early period can be found in John Quail’s book The Slow Burning Fuse, Donald Rooum’s historical recollections in Information for Social Change 27, and our own archives.
